This Week in Health
01/30/2007

Thursday’s the day to honor intravenous nurses. National Intravenous Nurse Day has honored infusion nurse specialists every year since 1981. This day of recognition honors the commitment the infusion nurses show, along with the outstanding patient care they provide.

If your New Year’s resolutions included a push to become more educated about your health and health-related topics, you’re in luck this week, as Blount Memorial Hospital offers education programs and support groups for the entire family.

First, if you’re expecting a new arrival and haven’t been inside the Family Birthing Center, you’re invited to attend a tour of the center tonight from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The center’s staff will show the labor and delivery rooms and secure birthing area, as well as host a brief discussion of selected policies and procedures new moms and dads need to know about. To register for the free tour, call 865-981-3983.

Cancer patients and their support people are invited to tomorrow’s noon to 1 p.m. Lunch and Learn program, held in the Blount Memorial Cancer Center conference rooms 1 and 2 on the second floor. The topic is clinical trials, and board-certified oncologic pharmacist Aubrey Waddell will talk to participants about what a cancer clinical trial is and how you can determine whether you should sign up for one.

The free program is made possible by a generous grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. To register for the program, which also includes a light lunch, call 865-981-3983.

It’s the fourth week of January, and for those die-hard dieters and exercisers, exercise and weight loss might not seem that hard. But, if you’re trying to stick with those New Year’s resolutions but think a new approach to diet and exercise might be helpful, make plans to join psychiatrist Dr. Brent Coyle at Wednesday’s noon to 1 p.m. Good Health Connection presentation. The free program that’s open to the community meets in the Blount Memorial Medical Fitness classroom on the hospital’s 2-east floor. For more information, call 865-977-5636.

Thinking you’d like to learn more about the surgical and laparoscopic treatments of obesity in 2007? If so, make plans to join bariatric surgeons Dr. Mark Colquitt and Dr. Jonathan Ray at Thursday’s 7 p.m. Bariatric Lecture Series that’s being held in the Blount Memorial Cancer Center conference rooms 1 and 2 on the second floor. Reservations are required, and can be made by calling 866-300-8644.

If cancer support is what you or your loved one needs, a free education and support group for cancer patients, survivors, family members, caregivers and friends is offered on Thursday from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Blount Memorial Cancer Center conference rooms 1 and 2 on the second floor. Licensed staff members lead the non-intrusive groups. For more information, call 865-980-5025.

A support group for parents of children who have died -- The Compassionate Friends Foothills Chapter -- meets tonight from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Blount Memorial Hospital auditorium. More information is available by calling 865-984-4223.

Don’t let the week go by without recognizing the nurse anesthetist in your life or community. This week, National Nurse Anesthetist Week, provides recognition for the nation’s 30,000 certified registered nurse anesthetists who have provided anesthesia care for more than 100 years. Each year, certified registered nurse anesthetists, who practice in every setting that uses anesthesia, administer more than 65 percent of the anesthesia used in the United States.
