Blount Memorial program helps people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease breathe easier

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth-leading cause of death in the United States and accounts for billions of dollars in medical care and disability payments. Research indicates, however, that pulmonary rehabilitation reduces hospital admissions and improves the ability of those with COPD to perform daily activities.

Blount Memorial's pulmonary rehabilitation program includes exercise, education, stress management and support. In a safe, medically monitored environment, people with COPD can recondition their muscles, improve quality of life and learn strategies that can help them resume most prior activities.

Participants include people with asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, interstitial fibrosis, lung transplant/reduction and sleep apnea. A physician referral is required.
